hey, I have a photo of me and Val Kilmer on my bulletin board. I did a brief stint here as a publicist for AmeriCares, a pretty bogus humanitarian relief organization. They did a mission to Iraq well before 9/11 and Val Kilmer, looking for publicity, joined them on the trip. We were on the tarmac at JFK airport for a photo op. He's looking all top gun and I and another guy from my firm are in the background in suits and sunglasses. I'm reaching into my suit jacket inside pocket - looking very secret service.

AmeriCares was such a bogus operation. They took donations of expired medicines from pharmaceutical companies who were only too glad to give it to them. Since they were expired, the pharmaceuticals would have had to incur the cost of ditching them. Instead, by donating to AmeriCares, they were able to spare that expense while taking a nice tax write-off for the donation. That in and of itself ain't too bad, I guess - when you consider that expired drugs are better than none at all. The really bad thing is that the medicine usually was not what was needed in places dealing wth a humanitarian crisis. They needed bottled water and such, not anti-constipation medicine. AmeriCares would take their booty and fly it over then dump it on the locals who had no use for it. For the photo op, I had asked the AmeriCares guys to leave a couple of palettes of drugs off the airplane so that Val and other volunteers could load it onto the plane for the cameras. Those buffoons did what I asked, but the palettes they left out were boxes of Tums!
