Subject: Calista had her 3yr checkup today and the Dr found a slight heart murmur

Ok so she's 3 years 7 months, I'm a little behind the times! She weighs 28 1/2 lbs-fully dressed (10%) and is 38in (30%) She refused to say 1 word to the dr, but did very well with her shots, and has had so much energy since then I think they gave her shots of speed!

But the Dr noticed a small murmur when listening with her sitting up. She asked if we'd ever noticed this before and that answer was obviously no! She had another Dr come in and she agreed it was slight, but definitley there. They both said it is not an emergency, but told us to call Primary Childrens Hosp to see a pediatric cardiologist soon.

I'm numb. It seems just yesterday we were up having a nine month old get EEGS and MRI's for seizures. I don't want to go back. I feel horrible for not getting her to her checkup on time. My head says to calm down, but my heart isn't paying attention.

I don't feel ready for this.

It is a concern when giving them certain medications or with specific illnesses - but it isn't a life/death situation.

The reason she would need to be seen by a cardiologist is because sometimes the valves don't sit properly in the 'seat' and that can be just a fluke, or like with our Meg, it was caused by her having too much iron in her blood (she had been anemic and no one bothered to see if she had gotten over it with the extra iron supplements).

Sam still has his murmur - and always will. Now, because of the valve involved, he takes prophylactic doses of antibiotics before he sees the dentist or has any 'dirty surgeries'.

I do believe that the order to see that dr would be precautionary and to confirm what they are hearing, which valve it is and if there is any reason to be concerned. Again, if it isn't very loud, it likely is just fine and would need to be watched.

She'll be fine, Lynece - if I can remain calm with Sam, you will be OK with her.

I know its not an emergency, but I hate the thought of waiting that long to get any more info. I may call the ped back and ask her to make the appt. We did that when Calista had her seizures and you get in much quicker.

I know that they are quite common and one of my brothers had one at birth and then grew out of his. I guess what bothers me most, is that is wasn't discovered at birth, but 3 1/2 years later.

I had to take so many anti nauseau drugs plus steroids when pregnant with Calista that I automatically start to worry that I'm the cause of all her problems. Irrational I know,but the fear and guilt sneaks in.

I'm just so overwhelmed right now with everything. debt, selling that stupid house, seeing a chiropractor for my back pain, shipping a cat to Candy's folks in TX and now something wrong with my baby. Add the stress of Jon's job (and still not knowing about the overseas one)and various church responsibilities and I'm a basket case. Can someone stop this ride please, I want to get off!

Thanks for letting me vent. I haven't "seen" you around lately. Is all well with you?
