We just made a four hour car trip... going there wasn't bad, but coming home... ugh! Even though Timothy slept half the way coming home, it was constant fighting. We do have a tv and vcr in the van, so that did help a lot. But here are some other things I have done that help (especially on our 3 day car trip driving straight from CA to WI 4 years ago):

Have each child pack a bag of toys and small things to play with, then keep the bag next to them.

Give each child a blanket to be comfortable with.

Wrap small toys and then give them to the kids at certain intervals... like a new small toy every hour. They can be very cheap toys, or even toys that they already have and maybe forgot about. But unwrapping something makes it seem so exciting and they will usually play with it for awhile.

Oh, and maybe you can take some of their regular toys and put them in socks or something. Like Hot Wheels. If it takes them 5 minutes to get each toy out to play with, and you have 6 toys .... that's an extra 1/2 hr you occupied them! LOL

Bring lots of snacks (that aren't messy) and water bottles or sippy cups. Try not to worry about messing up their meal schedule, a peaceful ride is more important (at least to me).

If you don't have a tv/vcr , then maybe bring some cassette tapes with fun songs on them.

A sheet of aluminum foil and some small toys to interact with it will keep them busy for awhile.

And keep things next to you (snacks, toys...) so that you can hand them back or toss them back to the kids without stopping. If you will be tossing, bring extra in case your toss misses. It really slows you down if you need to keep stopping. You will probably want to stop once on a 4 hr drive, but it makes it a lot faster if you stop as little as possible. I always think the kids will just run around a little and get worn out... wrong! They are always more wild and hard to calm down when we get back into the car.

Good Luck!
