I am sure you will talk to him about what he did and why it was wrong and how he would feel if someone took something of his. And taking it back at this age or really any age and having to apologize is the best thing to do. I think it makes a big impression on them. And don't feel that this is a signal of things to come. I think many many children do this at some point in their lives. And most do not become thieves.
