Subject: Signs that the Xterra may not be discontinued after all.

I've gone back and forth over whether I think there will be an Xterra for 2013 and beyond. Crossovers have taken a good chunk of the market because of gas prices, but Xterra sales have come back up a bit from the all-time lows. The segment itself, ("Mid-size SUVs"), is disappearing.

(See "Nissan Xterra Living on Borrowed Time" http://www.autoguide.com/auto-news/2010/08/nissan-xterra-living-on-borrowed-time.html )

But now I read this in a local Tennessee newspaper...

"Construction is well under way on a $1 billion lithium-ion battery plant in in conjunction with the production of the all-electric Leaf in 2012, the plant will begin manufacturing the Nissan Rogue sport utility vehicle in 2013.

Smyrna will also being manufacturing the new Infiniti JX luxury crossover utility vehicle early next year, while the Frontier and Xterra move to the Canton, Miss., plant."

So why would they tool up a plant to produce a vehicle that is only going to be shut down? I'll have to look into this some more, but I'm thinking the X may very well soldier on.
