Subject: Old Xterras aren't known for power.
In reply to: Lynne D 's message, "Xterra for a new driver?????" on 19:24:17 08/12/09 Wed

If I was 16 (well even at 40 now), I'd rather have an Xterra than a Rav4 or CRV, especially since they're teenage boys and those other "cars" are pretty feminine. The older Xterras don't have a lot of power. Much slower than most mid-size economy cars, so that might be a plus for keeping their speed down. They do need to understand about the physics of a taller, heavier vehicle (education) and just because it's 4-wd doesn't mean they can go flying around corners. I drive mine like a grandma for the most part, except when I'm offroad, but even then it's still slow. They are known for crash survivability as well.

That said I'm also with OffroadX that any car a 16 year old gets into is going to crash eventually. 2000-2004 Xterras are pretty cheap, so maybe that's not a big deal nowdays. I certainly wouldn't buy them a new one. My kids would kill to be able to drive my Xterra, but who knows if we'll even have gas by the time they can drive.
