The whole problem for most people is that they don't use SUV's for what they were originally intended for, getting people and cargo into rough country comfortably. Maybe blame it on marking and ego, but 95% never leave the road. Bad choice people are paying for now.

I just drove to Montana for a vacation last week. 1400 miles when it was all done. I took my Subaru and got 30 mpg, probably double what my truck would have gotten). There were times in the woods it would have been nice to have my Xterra, but it just wasn't affordable to get it there, so I focused on other things to do and there were plenty.

I use it for fun in the mountains near my home and rarely complain about the gas because it's a "tool" used appropriately and its performance is well worth its cost (my earlier post about time with family and the outdoors).
