"Oooooo I absolutely love the Plaza" -- Eloise

One of the most beloved and recognizable characters in children's literature, "Eloise," comes to life in a live action film based on the bestselling illustrated children's books written by the late Kay Thompson, with illustrations by Hilary Knight. Academy Award-winning actress and Hollywood legend Julie Andrews ("The Princess Diaries," "Mary Poppins," "The Sound of Music") stars with ten-year-old newcomer Sofia Vassilieva ("The Brady Bunch in the White House") in the title role. "Eloise at the Plaza" will air as a presentation of "The Wonderful World of Disney" on SUNDAY, APRIL 27 (7:00-9:00 p.m., ET), on the ABC Television Network.

Ms. Andrew plays Nanny, the "rawther" British guardian to Eloise -- the precocious but lovable six-year-old resident of New York's Plaza Hotel who endlessly roams the landmark in search of adventure. Along with her pug dog, Weenie, and turtle, Skipperdee, who eats raisins and wears sneakers, Eloise is always causing mischief and mayhem, often dragging a beleaguered Nanny - "my mostly companion" - along for the ride. Also starring are four-time Emmy nominee Jeffrey Tambor ("Never Again," "Pollock") as hotel manager Mr. Salomone, Emmy Award-winning actress Christine Baranski ("Chicago," "The Guru") as events coordinator Prunella Stickler, and Emmy Award-winning actress Debra Monk ("NYPD Blue," "Meredith Willson's The Music Man") as Central Park horse buggy driver Maggie. Illustrator Hilary Knight makes a cameo appearance as himself.

The Plaza is bustling with activity as hotel manager Mr. Salomone is juggling preparations for a grand debutante ball, as well as the stately visit of a royal prince. A besotted Mr. Salomone pleads with the irrepressible Eloise not to meddle in affairs, but it's too late. Eloise is determined to get an invitation to the ball and wants the royal prince as her escort!

While she waits for the arrival of the prince, there is some match-making to do and broken hearts to mend among the hotel's eclectic group of guests. Eloise meets Molly Daniels, a beautiful but lonely debutante whose socialite mother would much rather pair her daughter with the stuffy and rich Randall than with Eloise's friend and tutor, Phillip. There is Eloise's beloved Nanny, who has a crush on their handsome neighbor, Sir Wilkes, though they're both too shy to reveal their true feelings.

And finally there's Leon, a sad six-year-old boy whose father's been estranged from him since his mother died and who hasn't had a day of fun his whole life. Unaware that Leon is the royal highness himself, she whisks him away for a day of sightseeing in New York City. But when Leon fails to return to the Plaza, Mr. Salomone, as well as Leon's father, the Prince of Kushin, and the entire New York City Police department all point fingers at Eloise. With much imagination and heart, Eloise conjures up the grandest of schemes to bring a happy ending for everyone and get herself to the ball in time!

Also starring are Victor A. Young as Mr. Peabody, Stephanie Anne Mills as Molly Daniels, Kenneth Welsh as Sir Wilkes, Eve Crawford as Mrs. Daniels, Corinne Conley as Mrs. Thornton, Tannis Burnett as Miss Thompson, Julian Richings as Patrice, Jonas Cherniak as Philip, Kintaro Akiyama as Leon, Denis Akiyama as the Prince of Kushin, Peter Keleghan as Mr. Nye, Gerry Quigley as Jerry, Araxi Arslanian as Head of Housekeeping, Debra McGrath as Cornelia, George Chiang as Mr. Toyama, Cliff Saunders as Max, Hilary Knight as Hilary Knight, Donna Feore as Eloise's Mother, Colm Magner as Thomas, Jason Jones as Bartender, Rob Smith as the NYPD Officer No. 1, Barneita Runnings as Woman/Guest, Genelle Williams as Ruth, Jessica Beitchman as Linda, Fionnuala Jamison as Guest, David Sparrow as Charlie, Sergio Di Zio as Bellhop No. 2/Lou, Jonathan Wilson as Bellhop No. 1/Frederic, Janet Van De Graaff as Beautician, Tony Sciara asMarco (Asst. Chef), Sol Rosenthal as Waiter, Greg Farkas as Ruth's Date and Sam Strasfield as Linda's Date.

First published by Simon and Schuster in 1955, "Eloise" was an instant bestseller and a literary sensation. Subsequently the late author, Kay Thompson, and illustrator Hilary Knight collaborated on three other bestselling Eloise sequels: "Eloise in Paris," "Eloise at Christmastime" and "Eloise in Moscow." The "Eloise" books have sold over 3.5 million copies to date. The long awaited latest installment, "Eloise Takes a Bawth," was a major publishing event when released Oct. 22, 2002, after 40 years since its initial conception. A No. 1 New York Times bestseller, the book has spent 20 consecutive weeks on The New York Times bestseller list since its publication.

"Eloise at the Plaza" was directed by Kevin Lima, who helmed the box office hits "102 Dalmatians," starring Glenn Close, the 1999 animated feature "Tarzan" and the classic animated tale "A Goofy Movie."

Patrick Meehan (head of Hand Made Films) and Denise Di Novi ("A Walk to Remember," "Original Sin," "Message in a Bottle") are executive producers. "Eloise at the Plaza" is written by Janet Brownell (ABC's "Gilda Radner: It's Always Something").

"Eloise at the Plaza" was produced by Hand Made Films in association with Di Novi Pictures, with Christine Sacani and Thomas Adelman serving as producers.

JULIE ANDREWS
Nanny in ABC's "Eloise at the Plaza" & "Eloise at Christmastime"

While the world has known Julie Andrews and long savored the magic of her artistry in film, television, on stage and in recordings, she has continued to seek new and challenging opportunities through which to ply her seemingly endless talents.

In 2001 she starred in the blockbuster box-office hit, "The Princess Diaries," the opening of which became the second-largest live-action "G" rated release in Walt Disney history. That year Ms. Andrews also starred in the CBS television "live" presentation of "On Golden Pond," opposite Christopher Plummer. After starring as Nanny in "Eloise at the Plaza" and "Eloise at Christmastime," ABC's upcoming telefilms based on the famed children's book series, Ms. Andrews will begin filming the sequel to "The Princess Diaries," to be again directed by Garry Marshall.

A native of Walton-on-Thames, a small town southwest of London, Ms. Andrews made her theatrical debut in a musical revue at the age of twelve. After establishing herself in her teens as a London West End star, she crossed the Atlantic at the age of 19 to appear in the Broadway production of "The Boyfriend." The show was an instantaneous hit, for which Ms. Andrews received a Drama Desk Award.

Following the success of "The Boyfriend" and her Tony Award-nominated performances in Broadway's "My Fair Lady" and "Camelot," Ms. Andrews was signed on to play the title role in the Disney film, "Mary Poppins." Her feature film debut earned her a Golden Globe and an Academy Award for Best Actress. She then played Maria in the Rodgers and Hammerstein classic film, "The Sound of Music," which not only earned her another Golden Globe Award for Best Actress and another Academy Award nomination, but became the highest grossing film of all time, confirming the global stature of its star. Other feature film credits followed, including "Hawaii" Alfred Hitchcock's "Torn Curtain," "Thoroughly Modern Millie" with Mary Tyler Moore and Carol Channing, "Star" and "Darling Lili" -- the first time she was directed by her future husband, Blake Edwards. In the 1960s she received three Golden Globe Awards, one of which was for being "The World's Favorite Actress."

Ms. Andrews has appeared many times on television. She starred in the Rodgers and Hamerstein CBS production of "Cinderella." The first of her many well-rated television specials was "Julie and Carol (Burnett) at Carnegie Hall." From 1972-75 she hosted her own series, "The Julie Andrews Hour," which won eight Emmy Awards. Other television credits include her Emmy Award-winning special, "The Sound of Christmas," with Placido Domingo and John Denver, "Julie and Carol: Together Again," "Our Sons" - her dramatic television acting debut opposite Ann Margret -- and "One Special Night," opposite James Garner, which became the highest-rated CBS-TV movie of the year.

She continued to star in a number of feature films, including "10" with Dudley Moore, "S.O.B.," "The Man Who Loved Women" and "Victor/Victoria," which earned Ms. Andrews her fourth Golden Globe Award and third Academy Award nomination. Subsequent film credits include "That's Life" with Jack Lemmon, "Duet for One" and "Tchin-Tchin," opposite Marcello Mastroianni.

Throughout her career, Ms. Andrews has recorded over 25 albums and has headlined many sold-out concert tours. In 1992 she performed the starring role of Anna in the bestselling recording of Rodgers and Hammerstein's "The King and I," and earned a Grammy nomination for her album "Julie Andrews' Broadway: The Music of Richard Rodgers." In the mid-90s she returned to the New York stage in Stephen Sondheim's hit musical, "Putting it Together," and the Broadway production of "Victor/Victoria."

Ms. Andrews is also the author of several bestselling children's books, including "Mandy," "The Last of the Really Great Whangdoodles," "Babe," "Little Bo," "Little Bo in France" -- with illustrations by Henry Cole -- and the popular "Dumpy" series, co-authored with her daughter, Emma Walton Hamilton, and with illustrations by Tony Walton. Ms Andrews will launch her own imprint, "The Julie Andrews Collection," a new series of children's books, for HarperCollins in 2003.

One of Ms. Andrews' most important priorities is the work she does for numerous charities. In addition to her work for Save the Children and UNICEF, she is a Good Will Ambassador for the United Nations Development Fund for Women (UNIFEM), which provides financial and technical support to low-income women in developing countries. She has traveled throughout the world on their behalf and for Operation USA, a nonprofit international relief organization of which she is a board member. She is also a board member of The Bay Street Theatre, a not-for-profit professional regional theatre located in Sag Harbor, New York.

Ms. Andrew's talent and achievements have been recognized by her native England, where she was made a Dame Commander of the British Empire by H.M. Queen Elizabeth II in 2000. The following year she received a prestigious Kennedy Center Honor Award.

Ms. Andrews has been married to filmmaker Blake Edwards for 33 years, and between them they have five children and five grandchildren.
