Moran ran secret crusade against Saddam, claims friend

The Federal Government and family of murdered Adelaide cameraman Paul Moran remained silent today on claims he spent more than 10 years assisting an attempt to destabilise Iraqi President Saddam Hussein.

Mr Moran, 39, was killed two weeks ago by a suicide bomber while on assignment for the ABC in northern Iraq.

The freelance cameraman was one of five people killed in the northern town of Sadiq when a suicide bomber blew up a taxi on March 22.

To date, he is the only Australian killed in the conflict.

The Adelaide Advertiser yesterday quoted Rob Buchan, a friend of Mr Moran, who said that throughout the 1990s Mr Moran worked for Washington-based public relations company, the Rendon Group, which was contracted by the US Central Intelligence Agency to run propaganda campaigns against the dictatorship.

Mr Buchan said Mr Moran had worked as a freelance subcontractor specialising in audio-visual production.

"Sure, he may have had this kind of James Bond lifestyle but he was totally dedicated to making sure these people were not forgotten. That's what he should be remembered for, nothing else," Mr Buchan said in the article.

The report said Mr Moran also used his experience as a freelance cameraman to train Iraqi dissidents in the use of hidden cameras to covertly film military activities.

He also worked closely with exiled Iraqi opposition parties in their campaign to mobilise an uprising against Saddam, the article said.

Mr Moran was also involved in the defection of an Iraqi scientist who provided evidence to the US government about nuclear, chemical and biological weapon laboratories in Iraq, the newspaper said, adding that the scientist's wife, children and brother now live in Adelaide.

Mr Moran was buried in Adelaide on Wednesday.

He is survived by wife Ivana and baby daughter Tara.

Neither the Department of Foreign Affairs nor Mr Moran's brother Gerry would comment on the allegations.

Mr Buchan flew to Singapore this morning and was unavailable for comment.
