George W. Bush blurted out more than once, mentioning the crusade in the Middle East. After a strong negative reaction to these statements all around the world, PR people from the White House tried to mitigate the overall impression from Bush’s excessively straightforward speeches, referring to the slips of the US President’s tongue. But still, further events and Bush’s rhetoric showed that there were no slips of the tongue.
This rhetoric was so evident that it revealed the religious essence of the British-American invasion of Iraq, and even Christian European leaders, concerned by the prospects of the new war of civilizations on the worldwide scale, strongly opposed the actions of the US and the actions of Bush personally.
Statements made by the President of Germany were the most scandalous and revealing. Johannes Rau strongly criticized both war in Iraq and George W. Bush’s statements on its religious propriety.
«There are situations when a war becomes inevitable, but it was not the case with Iraq», – German leader stated on German NTV channel.
Moreover, according to the German President, it was a «grand misunderstanding» on behalf of George W. Bush to say that the Divine Mission spurred him to wage this war.
«I do not believe that one nation gets a Divine instruction to liberate another nation», – Johannes Rau stated. He also added that the question was «absolutely unilateral».
According to him, the Bible contains no calls for crusades, and the US President’s point of view is not mandatory for all Christians. «The Pope is most likely to speak on behalf of all Christians on this issue», President of Germany mentioned. He expressed his view that the solution of the Israeli-Palestinian conflict is a more vital task than the war in Iraq. However, «unfortunately, the US Administration is least concerned about it».
Two US-based leading Christian Evangelist organizations, specializing on missionary work, stated the other day that they have the groups of their representatives ready to leave for Iraq at any moment «to satisfy physical and spiritual needs» of the Muslim population.
The statements made by the European leaders are even increasing the overall impressions concerning the true intentions of the British-American alliance compared to the actions and statements made by US Christian fundamentalist groups.
Thus, on March 25 the Southern Baptist Convention, the largest Protestant denomination in the US, who openly supported the war in Iraq, and the Franklin Graham Samaritan Foundation announced that their representatives are now near the Iraqi borders in Jordan, ready to enter Iraq as soon as they will feel safe there.
Both organizations are claiming that their number one priority will be to provide food, housing and other necessities for the Iraqis who suffered from the war and from the blockade. They are also going to promote their Christian faith in the country, where there are estimated 97% Muslims and about 1% Christians.
«We are going where there is a possibility to meet with the need. We do not mind the name of Christ. We are preaching by deed and by word. We are staying who we are», Director of the Samaritan Foundation Ken Isaac stated.
In this regard one of the Islamic periodicals accurately noted: «Through the smoking ruins of Iraqi houses, through dead bodies of women and children will the divisions of crusaders carry their ideology mixed with popcorn, offering the Iraqis, who are dying from starvation, a piece of Big Mac with pork in exchange for adopting Christianity».
