Many organisations operate without being registered with and approved by the government.An Australian Business Number is NOT registration as a non profit organisation. You should also be aware that donations to these organisations are usually NOT tax deductible as they do not meet the criteria set by the tax department:being not for profit does not meet the criteria i.e.your local cricket club is more than likely to be an incorporated not for profit organisation;donations to them are NOT tax deductable. If you see an ABN then you can check the organisation out through the department of fair trading in your state and see if it a registered business or an approved organisation.
