You can tell your horse's age from its brands if you know roughly how old it is:
The top number on the off side is the foal number your horse was where it was bred (in your mare's case, she was the third foal born at her stud that year)
The bottom number on the off side is the last digit of the year your horse was born (so your mare was born in either 1984 or 1994, probably 1994 which would make her about 9, which agrees with your vet's opinion. A horse dentist may also be able to help with aging your horse)
The brand on the near side is the stud's symbol (so XP is the symbol that horses born at your mare's stud are branded with. You may be able to search for this brand on the internet to find out exactly which stud this is)
I hope this gives you a bit of an idea about your mare's history.
