After a long chat with ness a few weeks ago she asked me to put up the story of our two horses, ill also pop in a few pictures of them :-).
Way back in '98 (seems like forever) a 13 year old girl (me) was begging her parents for a horse. She had owned a horse before which started the addiction pumping through her veins. She'd even visit the local stables and volunteer to muck out stables, just so she could be around these wonderful animals. Back to the story.. She would rifle through the local news papers, constantly check the notice board at the local tack store until one day she came across "2 horses for lease, must go together". Now this was perfect for her, as she had a younger sister. She asked her parents, and they told her that "She'd be the one calling and organising it" now this wasnt a problem, she dashed to the phone and dialed the number frantically, afraid that the horses may already be homed. She met a warm voice on the other end that asked her several questions and finally they set up an appointment to go see them. She sat anxiously in the backseat of the car, looking out the windows, wanting to have the first glimpse of the horses. The car rolled down the dusty dirt road, around a small bend to meet a haflinger and an arabian saddled up and ready to go. Needless to say there was nothing holding her back, she shot straight out of the car and was already petting her new equine friend. It wasnt long before she was up on the haflingers back, and it wasnt long after that when her new equine friend started pulling his tricks. She rode him like a pro, and didnt take no for an answer (even when he took off at a gallop for that low branch) there was no mistaking it, she was inlove, and blind to the fact that there was something terribly wrong...
Now thats the dreamy story, heres the reality.
Nugget(haflinger) and Salomi's (arabian) owner told us they were good do-ers, told us that they only went to see them once ever 6 months, and also told us we would never EVER catch Nugget from the paddock (youd have to lead salomi out first and Nugget would follow). This still didnt phase me, I was love struck. It wasnt until we got them 'home' until we started having problems. The horses took a long time loading in the float, and Salomi stressed the whole ride, she had ben whipped ext before whe had her to...umm.. force her into the float. We had been told that nugget had been tied to a post and then had fire cracker thrown at him so he would run.. who knows what else he had to go through. We went to see them every day, and every day it was the same thing, wander around in the paddock for hours before you could even TOUCH nugget, he was terrified.
But we took it one day at a time, and week by week it would take a few minutes less until one day...
Now 16 our heroin had been working, talking with, grooming and loving the two horses. She had had countless falls but never blamed the horse, and always got back on. She had lost her confidence a little in riding, but that never stopped her trying.
One late april evening she went through the usual routine of preparing the horses feed, packing the tack, ext in the car. Her mother drove her the short distance to the paddocks where she expected the usual, Nugget being a pain in the behind, letting her catch him and just before she could do the halter up, taking off again. She didnt mind though, it had almost become a game.
The car was stopped and she unloaded all the gear, set out there feed before walking to the side of the paddock. She sighed seing neither of them in sight she knew that she would have to treck to the other side of the paddock, not getting back until it was dark. She sighed again and called there names "Nu-u-u-get Salomi come on" she paused and was just about to call again when she heard a whinny from down the hill, followed by a low call. She laughed and almost cried as she saw the two of them cantering over the hill to greet her.
It took a long time for me and my sister to win nuggets trust, although it was hard at times I wouldnt change it for anything! Nugget is now 27 and still has atleast 5 more good riding years in him, but after being mistreated the old boy diserves a long retirement.
This is salomi
and this is Nugget
