Subject: Criminal profiling, psychology and forensics: Methodology?

A person had gas thrown in their eyes and face. Stuck on the head several times. Told, "move or your kids are next". then the sound of a cigarette lighter attempting to be struck several times. The subject then ran off while the victim attempted to get away.Struggling with the buring of gas and being stunned over the whole incident. What type of person are we dealing with other then the obvious, a criminal but more the psychology of this?
