    Claim: A 1654 Nostradamus prediction said World War III would begin with the fall of "two brothers," a reference to the destroyed World Trade Center towers.
    Status: False.

    Nostradamus did not write the quatrain now being attributed to him. (One wonders how a guy who died in 1566 could have written an item identified as being penned in 1654 anyway.) It originated with a student at Brock University in Canada in the 1990s, appearing on a web page essay on Nostradamus. That particular quatrain was offered by the page's author, Neil Marshall, as a fabricated example to illustrate how easily an important-sounding prophecy can be crafted through the use of abstract imagery. He pointed out how the terms he used were so deliberately vague they could be interpreted to fit any number of cataclysmic events.

    (A dissertation on a somewhat similar-sounding real prophecy of Nostradamus' which contains the line "From the sky will come a great King of Terror" can be found here. Note that even a liberal reading places the events it describes in July of 1999, not September of 2001, and the same prophecy has already long since been applied to a wide variety of different events -- both real and imagined.)

    It appears someone mistook Marshall's illustrative example for an actual Nostradamus prophecy and, not content to let well enough alone, added "The third big war will begin when the big city is burning." A fabrication was thus further fabricated.

    But that wasn't the end of it. More fakery was piled on in later versions that now included all of the text quoted in the Example section above but now concluded with:

    "on the 11th day of the 9 month that...
    two metal birds would crash into two tall statues...
    in the new city...
    and the world will end soon after"

    Similarly, another enhanced version incorporates the Example text into a more detailed prophecy:

    And Nostradamus predicted this (who knows how long ago):

    "In the year of the new century and nine months,
    From the sky will come a great King of Terror...
    The sky will burn at forty-five degrees.
    Fire approaches the great new city..."
    "In the city of york there will be a great collapse,
    2 twin brothers torn apart by chaos
    while the fortress falls the great leader will succumb
    third big war will begin when the big city is burning"

    Another version asserts:

    "The third great war will start when the two tall lances fall in the great city. The day birds offer themselves up to the heavens"

    The closest any true Nostradamus writing comes to any of these is the one often cited as Century 6, Quatrain 97:

    Cinq and quarante degrez ciel bruslera
    Feu approcher de la grand cité neuve
    Instant grand flamme esparse sautera
    Quand on voudra des Normans faire preuue.

    An approximate English translation would be:

    Five and forty steps the sky will burn
    Fire approaching the large new city
    Instantly a great thin flame will leap
    When someone will want to test the Normans.

    Even if this is a real prophecy of Nostradamus', it simply provides more evidence of how much shoehorning has to be performed to get one of these vague "predictions" to fit modern occurrences. It cites no date whatsoever. The line about a sky that "will burn at forty-five steps" is interpreted to refer to New York City, the "forty-five steps" being the Big Apple's latitude -- never mind that New York City is actually below the 41° latitude mark, and that several major North American cities (e.g., Boston, Milwaukee, Chicago, Minneapolis, Toronto, Montreal) are much closer to 45° latitude than Gotham. As well, New York (one of North America's oldest cities) is only "new" in the sense that its name contains the word "new" (a criterion which describes many other of the world's large cities, such as New Delhi), the flames resulting from the terrorist attack in New York were anything but "thin" (or "scattered"); and nobody has a clue what "Normans" have to do with hijacked airliners crashing into American cities.

    This is a hoax.

    Nostradamus did not make the WW3 prediction. Nostradamus cannot tell the future. Someone thought it would be "funny" to cause others to worry, so they completely fabricated this "prophecy", and attributed it to
    Nostradamus.

    I looked up Nostradamus' prophecies. Here's what he really had to say about the King of Terror:

    The year 1999, seventh month,
    From the sky will come a great King of Terror:
    To bring back to life the great King of the Mongols,
    Before and after Mars to reign by good luck.

    Obviously he was wrong. Nothing of this sort happened in July 1999.

    As for this prophecy supposedly attributed to Nostradamus, Nostradamus never had anything to say about the "city of York"; he never spoke of the "2 twin brothers"; he never mentioned the "third big war".

    I realize I don't know many of you, but I felt compelled to respond to this misinformation. Please, give no credence to this prophecy. Give no credence to Nostradamus. If I made hundreds of vague, metaphor-ridden prophecies, it's really wouldn't be all that surprising if, over the course of centuries, current events occasionally resembled my predictions.

    We have enough real things to worry about, and enough things to pray for. Please pass this along to anyone you know who may feel the Nostradamus prediction is true. AGAIN, IT IS A HOAX!!!! How sick, but it's true.

    I keep an online journal. This is my entry for today.


    This morning I woke up to my radio stations morning show and they had the usual banter that they carry on with and that makes me laugh when I get up.

    I cursed the early hour of 4:45 this morning as I was getting into the shower and thought about the day and what I had to do. I stayed in the shower a little longer than usual. Just enjoying the hot water. My day seemed normal.

    I did my hair, I ironed my clothes, and I ate breakfast while swearing at my computer as I tried to get the server to sign on. Of course it didn't. I chatted with a few friends, and I emailed Erik. I included my usual weirdness and everything. Hoping he'd find it amusing. Anything to know I made him smile I guess.

    I had the TV on in the background. But I was watching Disney, cause they have cartoons on in the morning. While sitting here I felt nauseous. Thinking it was probably just cause of the early hour and eating I got up to change the channel, Little house on the Prarie was on. But in switching the channel Is when I saw it.

    I saw the image that would forever change my history and the history of every American. The World Trade Center was covered in smoke, in just a few short minutes the other tower was engulfed in flames and smoke. Two planes had crashed into the buildings. I watched in complete shock. Trying to soak up all the information I could about what was happening.

    Terrorism. Even the word leaves a bitter taste in my mouth. I watched in horror as they reported another plane crashing in Pensylvania. I got even more nauseous and the first Tower collapsed. My stomach was in my throat. The only thing I could think of was of people running down a narrow stairwell to save their lives. The feeling of sheer terror that they must be feeling not knowing their own destiny.

    I had to leave. I had to tear myself away from the television so I could leave for work. I turned the radio on and they were covering it as well. I drove down the street, wondering if the man in the car next to me knew what had happened to our Country just 90 minutes ago?

    It's amazing how surreal this all feels. The feeling of true helplessness has settled into the American Nation as we all sit by our televisions watching again in horror as they replay the second plane crashing into the towers. Listening as they talk about the people calling from their cellphones from under all the rubble crying for help. My heart breaks as I think of the phrase, "United we stand, divided we fall." So simple yet so true.

    Signs are flying up all around us. Someone is telling us something. To me it's that America was getting cocky, that we were staying up on our pedestal while claiming equality with the rest of the world.

    We will overcome this, just as we over came all of our conflicts in history. Going back to what America was based on. Brotherhood. And Faith. Not only Faith in God but Faith in ourselves as human beings. Faith that no matter what happens we will survive. Because we've made it this far. "Don't look back, something may be gaining on you." So from this day forward we shouldn't look back at what we lost, but more what we've learned.

    And also in the words of Rep. Orrin Hatch "We're going to find out who did this and we're going after the bastards."

    Someone sent this to me in an email...and I think this speaks VOLUMES. God Bless all of you.

    I sit here with my hands trembling as I type. I have just been watching the terrorist attacks in the United States. The pictures look like a war zone.
    It is scary. It is unfair. It is so horrible. There is not much you can do to help. I feel like I need to do something, so I am starting a "prayer chain". For the victims of the attack. For the friends and families of the victims. For all the lives lost. For all those helping to rescue, save, and treat the trapped and injured. For all of us who sit and watch the attacks on the television and listen to it on the news. We pray for understanding as to how and why this happened. For the strength to deal with the loss. For the courage to eventually pick up the pieces and move on with life. For the ability to one day forgive those responsible for this great loss. May God fill our hearts with love. Help take away the sorrow. Help heal the wounds. May the laughter of the children help us to remember that there is still good in this world. And, may the warmth of the sun, shine down upon us and help us find our smiles again. Strength in numbers. Prayer is very powerful.

    A little message was on the board about the whole Aaliyah thing. So considering the events that took place in New York today, I hope everyone, in their own way, says a little prayer for the people who lost their lives and were injured today.. as well as for their loved ones.


    Side note! Completely off topic from that: Crystal-- after reading some of your posts... is part of your job to dress the guys?
