Date Posted: 10:33:49 12/22/05 Thu Regardless of what side of the picket line you are on, this strike has been a long time coming. The MTA has lost all credibility over the last 3 years by its constant mismanagement and inability(unwillingness) to tell the truth to employees and the general public. If this were any other corporation, the hierarchy would have been fined and jailed for some of the nonsense that has been discovered these last few years. They cry poverty and then "find" a 1 Billion dollar surplus. After 2002 contract negotiations were settled, another set of books appeared from nowhere. Wake Up NY. How long does this have to go on before you stop letting them kick us in the ass. MTA board voted a pay raise of 33% for themselves, not to mention all the incentives and bonuses they recieve. They asked for more productivity from transit workers and got a 13% increase in ridership which we handled. Yet disiplinary actions increased for workers for "trivial" infractions. I know someone I work with who has 25 years on the job and has had a good sick record. He had been diagnosed with cancer and is undergoing chemotherapy treatments. This requires him to take time off to go to the hospital several time a month. He has the sick time saved to do this but management wants to put him out on a sick control list and this will eventually cause him to lose his job. What it that all about? Policy - Greed and corruption are primary motivators for the MTA bosses and their supporting policies and if that means stepping on the necks of the union membership, public ridership or anyone else who gets in the way so be it. Any way to save a $ to line their pockets determines that policy for them. Take conductors off the trains, we'll save millions. Close the token boothes, save more millions. Computer Based(crewless) trains, even more millions saved on salaries/penions by reducing the workforce. Just who gets the saving passed on to? The fare isn't going to be reduced. In fact it will just go up again, and again, and again. Safty issuses? Transit workers have recieved 0 for terrorist training. After 9/11 and 4 years later public/ employee safty is a joke and not a high concern to them. This has gone on long enough and something has to be done NOW!!! This not about dissatisfied greedy malcontents. We have a genuine argument and say enuff is enuff. We have a voice and we will be heard. This strike will determine the atmosphere for future contract negoitations for all city unions. What happens now will affect all other city contracts that follow. This is a union town and have made NYC what it is today. We move NYC. If you don't believe me...just look around.
