Date Posted: 10:24:14 03/07/06 Tue a van with passengers-possibly an illegal dollar van-plowed into a Brooklyn grandmother walking home from dialysis treatment in a hit-and-run accident that left her critically injured, cops said yesterday. As Jennifer GIBBONS, 56, LAY FACEDOWN ON FLATBUSH Ave. near East 36th st, the heartless driver stopped and got out. When he saw the crumpled woman in the street, he hopped back in and sped away southbound, witnesses told cops. The longtime subway matron, who suffered massive ingeries including two broken legs, a fractured pelvis and ribs and bleeding in her brain, was in critical condition last night at Kings County Hospital. "How can you hit someone and just leave them to die on the floor?" said GIBBONS' daughter, NICOLE GIBBONS,31,choking back tears at the family's home, two blocks from the scene of the 9 p.m. saturday hit-and-run in Flatbush. "That's my mother." Jennifer Gibbons, who was under sedation, was repored to be stabilizing and able to breathe on her own, but doctors told relatives they may have to amputate at least one of her legs. "They said they want to make sure she;s stable before they start to work with her bottom half," Nicole Gibbons said. "Her condition right now it's awful, but stable," the daughter added. "She knows that we're there because she was moving her arm a little bit." Despite receiving dialysis treatment three time a week, Gibbons, an immigrant from Trinidad and Tobago, has refused to give up her job cleaning the Stillwell Ave. Subway Station in Coney Island, which she's held for the past 31 years, her daughter said. Typically, the mother of four and grandmother of 10 takes a livery cab or the bus by herself to and from her dialysis treatments on Saturdays, relatives said. "She's refuses to stop. She's a gogetter," Nicole Gibbons said. Cops were still searching last night for the passengers and the van, described as burgundyyyyyyyy with a yellow-gold stripe, police said. They were looking into the possibility it was one of the many dollar vans-illegal and otherwise-that ply Flatbush Ave. Relatives pleaded for more witnesses to help police. "hopefully, someone who was in that van will come forward and say what happened," nICOLE Gibbons said. "Everybody loves this woman." Jennifer Gibbons will be in our hearts. We hope she will recover from this. and this van driver will turn himself in. [ Next Thread | Previous Thread | Next Message | Previous Message ] |
