Date Posted: 02:50:59 04/12/06 Wed As a former Union President for a large Hollywood Motion Picture Studio I know what Unions have to go through today to get their fair share of the profits. There is no doubt you and your Union were being denied your fair share. And it is always because the CEO and Vice Presidents want more for themselves. I know exactly what you mean when you said "The authority's attitude in these negotiations were cavalier and provocative." They always are. It is very unfortunate that you have been fined and jailed. What did they expect you to do on be-half of your members? Cave in? No, that is not the way Unions are supposed to negotiate. The fact that you caused many New Yorkers to have to find another way to get to work is the hazzard the MTA knew and took a risk in not giving you a fair and decent contract. And it is even more unfortunate that you have had to suffer because of it. I just wanted to let you know that if I had been in New York during the strike, I would have gladly found another way to get around town. Unions must be supported, especially when they have to take such a drastic step as a strike. My mentor learning about Unions taught me "No company has a union unless they need one." And it is so true. If companies treated their employees with respect, who would need a Union to get them more? Again, I applaud you, and I hope your members support you during this time. Even if they don't realize it now, when they retire, as I did 3 years ago, they will be very happy they were members of a Union that fought for and protected what they had built up over the years, because without it you can not exist on Social Security alone when you don't want to work any longer.
