I agree with TT. Until the writing improves the soaps are just going to continue their decline. The networks need to realize that soaps need to stop "inbreeding" and trying to be like bigger budget primetime shows.

By inbreeding I mean situations like JFP where soaps rarely seem to go outside of their own industry for behind the scenes staff. Good Lord! This woman may be a wiz at some aspects behind the scenes but at what cost? She has a horrible record and yet she keeps getting hired. Why? Because once Sanata Barabara was the toast of the industry under her reigns? How many other soaps have suffered at her hand? How many writers and EP's have we seen the same thing happen with? Soaps need new blood; writers and EP's who can think out of the box. Obviously what is currently happening is not working but nobody will wake up.

As far as my other comment goes, soaps don't have the budgets nor the ratings to be like big budget shows so why even try? Look at how terrible Passions special effects are or the horrid things Days has used. The spinmasters, of course, will tell us that is part of the "fun". Almost every soap is doing something or another that is an insult to our intelligence and we are so conditioned to forgiving the laziness of the writers that we have accepted these lame plot points.

In my opinion there is no reason, aside from the stupidity of the netowrks and laziness of the EP's and writers, that soaps couldn't be written at the same calibre as The West Wing, My So Called Life, Law & Order, Once & Again, The Sopranos, The Practice, etc. It's just too bad that we've settled for much less for way too long.
