GL is the next big soap to go to the chopping block. Game shows and court shows are already seeing a big resurgence(Syndicated Weakest Link premieres in January, Syndie Millionaire premieres Fall 2002).
Syndicated programming is going to take over the affiliates and some soaps will probably lose affiliates, resulting in their cancellation.
I bet by year 2010, the only soaps that will probably be left from this decade are All My Children, General Hospital, the Bell Shows and As the World Turns(more than likely under a new owner).
I bet NBC will cancel both Days and Passions in 2005, when both of their contracts are up. Corday is majorly screwing with Days and frustrated viewers are tuning OUT! I mean, really, how many times can we watch Kristian Alfonzo and Deidre/Andrea Hall try to recreate the popular Kristen/Susan saga?
And what is with Charity being turned into a frozen icicle? Unless the show claims it's fame via notoriety(i.e. little brother or sister burning their sibling at the stake, burying little brother alive in a box, etc.) we can expect it's cancellation in 2005.
I don't tape any soaps right now and don't intend to unless something interesting happens. It's sad how networks think they can do a half-a$$ job and expect viewers to tune in.
I know Chris Goutman is doing wonders to As the World Turns and everytime I watch it, I can't help but to think that is they way ALL soaps should be: clear dialogue, interesting characters and GOOD(OR mediocre) ACTING!
If I have to read another GLOWING review of GH's Tamara Braun as Carly, I will puke. I didn't even see this much sucking up to Guiding Light's Signy Coleman, who did a decent job as Teri Demarco/Annie Dutton.
But, I digressed. Anyway, the ratings will continue their decline unless the networks promote their shows and allow their shows to find their own voice.
