ABC News Head Unaware of Letterman Offer Until Late

March 02, 2002 06:43 PM ET

NEW YORK (Reuters) - The president of ABC News was unaware until two days ago of the network's talks with David Letterman to move his late-night television talk show from CBS to ABC, a source familiar with the situation said on Saturday.

If ABC is successful in its bid to lure Letterman, ABC's stalwart news program "Nightline," hosted by veteran news anchor Ted Koppel, stands to be replaced by a show that attracts a younger audience and richer advertising revenues.

David Westin, president of ABC News, was disappointed that he found out about the talks only after a call from a New York Times reporter on Thursday night, the source said.

Others at ABC News also were upset that "Nightline" had been characterized by an unnamed executive in a published report as having lost its relevancy, the source said.

Talks between ABC and Letterman began in January after the expiration of a period during which CBS had exclusive negotiating rights, a source familiar with the negotiations said on Friday.

Koppel's "Nightline" lags well behind "The Tonight Show" with Jay Leno and Letterman in viewership by the 18-year-old to 34-year-old demographic group that advertisers crave.

Industry sources in part attribute the disparity to the abundance of 24-hour cable news stations, which have made "Nightline" less vital as a news source than it was when it premiered more than two decades ago.

An ABC spokesman declined to comment.

CBS is a unit of Viacom Inc. and ABC is a unit of the Walt Disney Co.

Now, I know I am not in the precious women age 18-49 demographic, but there had GOT to be some sort of humanity in the world. I don't find Letterman or Leno entertaining at all and it was refreshing to at least turn the channel and see something DIFFERENT on at late night.

ABC has really messed up their late night lineup, first by allowing half-hour gabfest Politically Incorrect to be slaughtered in the ratings by affiliates moving it to early morning time slots(OK, the shock of what Bill Maher said is over with, move on! LOL).

And if they plan to move something as timeless and entertaining as Nightline, who's to say they won't move GH to compete with Y&R?

Apparently, Michael Eisner is smoking dope or something. I even read somewhere that Nightline may get the boot even if Letterman doesn't move to ABC, which is a shame.

Can't we have anything else different in Late Night other than talk shows with Hollywood Bimbettes? I hope ABC or CBS gets smart and choose to air something different, like a soap or something rather than trying to do a talk show. ABC doing a late night soap would be the ONLY way I'd accept Nightline gone(and judging by how badly they want Letterman, I am willing to bet they don't want a soap).
