One University of Texas student is dead and another is critically injured following an early morning fire at University Towers, one of the largest off-campus private student residence halls.

The Austin Fire Department is investigating the cause of the fire, which broke out about 6:20 a.m. at the University Towers apartments at 801 24th St., a few blocks west of the UT campus. The blaze was contained to one apartment in the 10-story east tower and was under control in about 30 minutes, firefighters said.

The critically injured victim, identified as 21-year-old Zawardy Ab Latiff, suffered burns over 80 percent of his body. Ab Latiff, an engineering student from Malaysia, was in a hallway when firefighters arrived. The 19-year-old man who died has not been identified.

"He said his roommate was still in the room," said Lt. Marcus Faske of the Austin Fire Department.

Firefighters pulled the second man from the room and paramedics started performing cardiac pulmonary resuscitation as they transported him to Brackenridge Hospital. The man, who paramedics said was in his early 20s, died on the way to the emergency room.

The injured victim was taken by helicopter to the burn unit at Brooke Army Medical Center in San Antonio.

Firefighters believe firewalls contained the fire to one apartment. None of the buildings in the two-tower complex, which houses about 600 residents, have sprinkler systems, said Asst. Fire Marshal Kevin Baum.

Residents were evacuated immediately, and hundreds of students stood on the sidewalk on 24th Street early this morning as firefighters fought the blaze.

Adam Jacob, 19, who lives in a first-floor apartment, said the sound of a fire alarm woke him at about 6:20 a.m..

"I just heard them come over the loudspeaker and say, 'This is not a drill. Get out of the building,' " Jacob said.

In an apartment directly below the burned apartment, David Patton, 19, and his roommates couldn't immediately tell what was happening.

"You could smell smoke on the way out," he said. "
