I had a serious accident and have permanent and very severe damage to the nerve in my neck, as well. I will suddenly have an attack of excruciating pain which sometimes lasts weeks or months. Firstly, not every remedy works for everyone. Sometimes, you have to try many things before you find what works for your pain and your body.
Here are some things to try:
1. accupuncture. Only go to a Chinese trained doctor who spent years interning in a Chinese hospital. Some Canadians have a three month course and think they know as much as the Chinese doctors.
2. naturpaths - can prescribe herbs, remedies and diet changes to help with the inflammation from injuries.
3. chiropractors - help some people a lot. Made me much worse.
4. herbalists - can prescribe herbs to calm inflammation and pain
5. massage therapy - helps some people but makes some worse
6. reiki or energy healing. This is one of the few things that helps me with my pain and not every time.
7. aromatherapy - Go to someone qualified who custom mixes an oil formula to rub into your body for your specific illness or problem. Good one in Toronto: acqua vita
8. meditation - can calm pain sometimes
9. hypnotherapy. Can be covered by OHIP. Check around.
10. I find that putting hot, wet compresses on the injury helps, using almost scalding water. Some people find that ice helps but some find that heat helps. It must be wet heat, though.
11. Wear proper shoes. Do not wear high heels. Always wear shoes with thick rubber soles or thick gel inserts, so that your spine is cushioned when you walk or run.
12. Make sure you use proper seating if you sit at a computer many hours a day. Having your neck or spine in an unnatural position for hours at a time can make your injury worse. If you're at a computer terminal all day, get up once an hour and stretch your whole body, especially your neck and wrists.
13. Never sleep in if you have an injury to your spine. If you sleep too many hours, the spine becomes inflammed and stiff. If you have to, experiment with how many hours you can sleep before you become stiff. If necessary, sleep fewer hours, to prevent pain. If you are tired, then, have a nap in the afternoon or early evening.
