I had a herniated disc at the L4-L5 disc in 1988. In March 2003 I had another herniated disc L5-S1 which double ruptured leaving me completely bedridden and on Dilaudid every 3 hours till I had surgery 5 weeks later. Due to the wait for surgery it left me with permanant nerve damage across my lower back and all down my left side with loss of reflexes and feeling in part of leg and foot. Diagnosis is Degenerative Lumbar Discs with Parasthesias and Neuropathy. I had been on Gabapentin 1800 mgs a day for almost a year with no relief of the pain only side effects from the drug. I have recently (3 weeks ago) weened myself off of Gabapentin and am in the same amount of pain off of it as I was on it. I found it to be absolutely of no benefit to me.
