Hi Ronni :)

Your problems sound very similar to mine -- I had heriated disks at L4 & L5 in '97, and the pain, from nerves being compromised, that went down my leg was astounding. Due to missed diagnosis, the problem went on until I had no reflexes in my leg, and the only option at the time was surgery to remove the disks. Since that time, I have continued to struggle with pain (although the severe pain down my leg is gone).
I know you must be feeling scared and I really emphathize! I do believe that there are treatments though, and medical interventions that will help you. Make sure you ask lots of questions, so you feel you are participating in your treatment.
I was fortunate that I was accepted in the Calgary Chronic Pain Centre, and have participated in a multi-disciplinary program that has made a huge difference for me. I'm not sure where you are from, but I hope there is something similar in your area. I've been able to benefit from some medical interventions (trigger points, prolotherapy, botox), physio, occupational therapy, psychological services, group therapy (anything from sleep to intimacy!), and pain self-management training. Often, all these areas need to be addressed in addition to whatever medical services are recommended for you.
One of the greatest things that I have found is the support group that we've formed in Calgary -- we meet every two weeks, and these people are my "rock" as they have often been through the same things, and truly understand what I have been through both physically and mentally. If there is a support group in your area, I would encourage you to contact them.
Please take care of yourself through this difficult time in your life. There is always hope!

Roxanne
