My pain began 5 years ago. I have an ache in my left leg. Most of the time I awake pain free. Usually late morning or early afternoon a dull ache begins. It slowly intensifies and becomes much worse within an hour. It seems to come from my lower back and radiate down my leg. Sitting makes it much worse. Everyone says that it is Sciatica but that is, as I understand, usually a sharp pain. What I have is a dull but very intense ache that becomes almost unbearable. Sitting is the worst, lying down does not help much. Standing is the best but I can not stand forever. It seems the only relief is a nights sleep and then the pain is gone. It usually returns by noon or early afternoon. I suffer about 6 days a week with one good day and a few times I awake with the pain starting almost right after I awake.
I had a CAT Scan of the lumbar spine a few years ago and the result was as follows....
The CAT Scan was performed from L3 to S1
It read as follows....
L3-L4 Normal appearance of the intervertebral disc. The size of the bony canal and intervertebral foramina is adequate.
L4-L5 Evidence of central and left lateral disc herniation. Hypertrophic changes of the posterior facet joints.
L5-S1 Evidence of a right lateral disc herniation causing compression of the right S1 nerve root. The size of the bony canal and intervertebral foramina is adequate.
The CT pelvis was as follows.... No significant abnormality is demonstrated.
I've had massage, relaxation therapy, acupuncture, physio therapy and seen a chiropractor. I had injections into my spine three weeks in a row, I have tried many anti-inflamatory pills and was perscribed anti depressannts. Nothing has helped as yet.
I am at a dead end. I watched the program on CTV yesterday about managing chronic pain.
How do I get to try opiods if doctors are afraid to try them?
Please help.
Daniel
