Strictly speaking, these ordeals happened both to boys and girls, but my experience is from being a boy in that period and histories I heard about girls being examined.

The standard school physical as it occurred each year in Norway in the 1960es-1970es occurred as follows.

Three pupils of the same sex were called down from class to the office of the nurse. There they were met, not by the nurse, but but with a female teacher with special authority functions in the school, called "inspector", which was the administrative boss of the health service at the school.

The kids had with them a sample of morning urine they had to deliver to the inspector that brought it into the more intimate exam room. Then they had to strip totally naked and sit down to wait.

Then the inspector followed each kid into the enclosed examination room while those remaining and those already examined sat naked and waited in the nurse's office.

When the kid entered the exam room, the nurse had already tested the urine specimen.

At the 1., 4. and 7. grades, a doctor performed the exam with the nurse assisting while the inspector went back to the room where the kids sat. In the other grades the nurse performed the exam with the assistance of the inspector. The role of the assistant person was mostly paper work.

These things were done at all of these exams:

The nurse let the kid stand on the weight and hisher weight was plotted on a chart. Then heshe had to stand against a length measuring device mounted on the wall and hisher length also got plotted.

The examiner took a blood specimen by stiching a finger and sucking some blood up into a tiny glass cylinder or glass tube, while the kid sat naked on a chair.

Then the kid had to rise up and go from and back to the examiner that watched the gait.

The kid was made to stand fronting the examiner that looked at him from top to toe, and might touch areas of the body, but there was not any specific pattern from time to time, except that the glands in the neck and under the shoulders were palpated shortly.

Then the kid had to turn and stand with his back fronting the examiner, which first looked at the kid from top to bottom, and then ran his finger down his spine from the top of the neck to the upper part of the buttock cleft.

The kid then had to bend forward and touch his toes and the doctor or nurse looked at his back from this position. The examiner adjusted the kid¨s position so that the buttock cleft got open, or aided this by discretely pulling the buttocks apart, and also looked at the anus of the kid.

When a doctor did the exam, these things were done in addition;

Then the kid had to sit down at a chair in front of the examiner, which took an otoscope and looked with it into each ear, into his nose through each nostrils and into each of the eyes of the kid.

Thereafter the kid had to open his mouth, while the examiner depressed his tongue with a wooden depressor, and looked into the mouth of the kid with the instrument.

The kid had to keep sitting down on the chair. The doctor listened to the heart with the stethoscope on the breast. Then he listened the lungs while the kids had to breath deep in an out. He did so first at the breast and then the back of the chest.

At the first grade the doctor checked that the testicles of boys were at place in the scrotum. At the 7. grade the doctor checked boys for hernia. There were several methods. One used was to push a finger up towards the testicular channel at each sides of the scrotum, while the boy tensed his abdominal muscles.

Further genital exam was inconsistent from time to time and between places or doctors. The genitals might not be examined further. The doctor might pull back the foreskin on boys. He might separate the labia of girls in standing or laying position. He might let the girl flex her legs while spreading her legs in a standing position, so that the labia were separated and the doctor could see the vaginal opening and the hymen.
