I have chosen an activity from a Number One book, used for the pre-intermediate level (Dynstar 3). There is a picture showing several cartoon characters, some are recent and others arenīt, and there is a birthday party of one of the characters going on. It is interesting from the beginning, because the younger students get very excited to know, for instance, who Charlie's angels are. So, we can profit from it having the older students explain them. The contrary also happens. The students really make an effort to explain in English who the most recent characters are. After having exchanged this information (Which is already English used for communicative purposes) we ask them to process what they see. So, the teacher asks who the birthday character is, what Wonder Woman is doing, who Superman is talking to, and so on. We also have them ask about the picture, firstly about what they can see in it. I would say, according to Littlewood that this is an activity of sharing and processing information. Afterwards, the students get the opportunity of imagining what is "beyond" what they can see. The teacher can start by asking, for instance, if we can see Snow White sitting with the Seven Dwarfs and telling a story, we can ask about what story she is telling, and, by their facial expression, if they are enjoying it. They end up asking a lot of questions and we get to know each one imagined a different party. I think the students enjoy and profit a lot from this activity.
