Examine one textbook and choose a good communicative activity. Describe it and then classify that activity according to the types presented by Littlewood.
According to Littlewood (1981), functional communication activities involve information gap and problem solving. There are four different types of activities which make communication possible and they are grouped according to two main uses of language: sharing and processing information.
The activity chosen can be classified as a sharing information one with restricted cooperation, since it produces a situation in which one student has information that another student must guess by means of questioning. It was selected from the book English File 2 (Oxeden, 1997).
Description:
Student A opens the book on page 120 and student B, 123. The students have the same crossword; however, there are some words missing. Student A has the words his partner needs, and vice-versa. Consequently, they should work in order to complete their crosswords. The objective of this activity is to teach students (or review) how to paraphrase words.
Example:
Student A asks about a word, for instance: “What’s 4 across?” Student B does not say the word; he just says its definition: “It’s a famous woman who lived in Egypt. She was a beautiful queen”. Then, student A has to guess the name: “Cleopatra”.
