Subject: task 12

The book I used was Meridian Plus - Student’s Book 3, by Jeremy Jarmer and Steve Elsworth. Longman. The activity is from Unit 3, page 12. It is a role-play activity.
After reading a text about Skye (a British island), students are asked to do the following activity:

Role Play

In groups of four, two students are parents and two are their grown-up children.
- ‘children’ should think of reasons why they want to leave Skye and go to the mainland
- ‘parents’ should think of reasons to persuade them to stay

Have conversations in which the ‘children’ announce that they are leaving - and explain why - and the ‘parents’ try to persuade them to stay.

The task is communicative because students are in a situation where they need to use language for a well defined communicative purpose. They are going to decide which kind of language to use in order to fulfill the task aim. Negotiation of meaning, language and discussion of ideas are present while they are deciding the reasons to stay/leave for example. The second part of the activity demands that students expose their ideas and try to persuade their interlocutor. In my opinion, the activity can be considered communicative.
