Subject: Task Thirteen

The activity I choose to use, I can’t call it my own because it is not something completely new. Actually it is quite common in language classrooms and it involves bringing to the classroom things that are close to the students. I did it once with a class of teenagers and found it very efficient. Not to mention that the students loved it.

I had them vote a song that they liked and brought it to the next class with its lyrics. I wrote the name of the song on the board, divided the class into groups of 4 and asked them discuss the title and write a short paragraph on what they thought the song was about. After that, the groups exchanged paragraphs and read it out loud for the rest of the class opening a class discussion on the subject. Then, I played the song once (taking notes were encouraged) and asked them to group up again and write another paragraph, this time a more accurate one. They repeated the process above of exchanging papers and class discussion. Then I handed out the lyrics and played the song once more.

This activity falls under Littlewood’s (1983) definition of “Process Information” activity: “learners must not only analyze information, but also argue, justify and persuade, in order to reach a common decision”. (p. 38)
