Subject: Task 13

Create a good communication activity and describe it to your classmates. Say which type it is, according to Littlewood.

Pre-teaching should concentrate on the following:
Structure: conditionals, should, other modals, comparatives
Vocabulary: educational/school words
Functions: Deciding, Agreeing, Disagreeing, Arguing a Point

Activity:

Our English school has some extra money from last year's budget and is asking the students to help them decide what should be purchased with this money. There is enough money to buy ONE item. Students are invited to make suggestions to the school boarder to help it decide. The teacher gives the students some example, so they could have an idea of how much money may be used. The students may use one of the examples or come up with their own suggestions.

1.The class should be divided in groups.
2.Each group must have one student that does not know what to buy. The others should choose an item from the teachers list or come up with something to buy.
3.Then, each student should defend his/her item, presenting the advantages of their suggestion, and try to convince the rest of the group that it is the best choice. The group has to decide what they want to buy, and prepare to tell the class what they want to buy and why.
4.The student, who did not know what to buy at the beginning of the activity, presents to the class what his/her group would suggest to the school board and why they chose it
5.After all groups present, the class will discuss and decide which would be the class suggestion.

Example of items to buy
-computers
-class furniture
-sports equipment
-an audio lab

Follow-up:
- The teacher may ask the students to write a letter to the school boarder making their suggestion and stating his/her reason.

Type of activity

According to Littlewood definition, this would be a Sharing and processing information, since students must discuss and evaluate each other’s information, in order to come up with a single suggestion.
