ACTIVITY

TYPE: Processing Information

RATIONALE: vocabulary is always a difficult topic in 2L learning. It only works if is associated to language use, that is, is learned in an effective and contextualized situation. According to William Littlewood in his “Communicative language teaching: an introduction” (1981:39), functional communication activities place learners in a situation where they need to use language for a well-defined communicative purpose. In the activity below, classified by Littlewood as Processing Information, “the stimulus for communication comes form the need to discuss and evaluate these facts, in pairs or groups, in order to solve a problem or reach a decision.” (Littlewood, 1981). This is the purpose of this activity.

ACTIVITY: in this activity, the students will be divided in two groups in order to organize a birthday party for one of them (chosen by the group). In one group the birthday will be celebrate as an informal dinner and the invitees will be close friends and the family. In the other group, the host will give a formal dinner for his/her workmates (the intention here is cause some impression). The students have to elaborate the menu in according to situation (formal or informal dinner). They can invent dishes (as long as it is possible) or use traditions dishes form theirs own country or another one. The meals should describe that is, which kind of food is used to prepared and how it is prepared.

STEPS: the teacher introduces the subject asking to the class which kind of food they most like and at which meal or place they eating them (lunch, parties, dinners, bars, restaurants, etc). The teacher can use visual aids to help the students with vocabulary (names of foods, tools used in kitchen, etc). The teacher explains the activity and asks for the students to choose one of them to be the person who is giving the party.
