The lexical approach is based on the idea that 'language consists of multi-word prefabricated chunks'(Lewis 1997). These 'chunks' are collocations, idioms, fixed and semi-fixed phrases. According to Lewis fluency is the result of the acquisition of a large store of fixed and semi-fixed prefabricated items which are 'available as the foundation for any linguistic novelty or creativity'(Lewis 1997). Typical activities include asking students to add intensifiers to semi-fixed expressions and then to underline all the nouns and the verbs that collocate with those nouns.
