The term lexical approach was coined by Lewis (1993) its focus is on the developing of the students’ abilities regarding the use of lexis, words and combination of words. This because the approach preaches that comprehend and produce phrases are an important aspect of the language acquisition. This approach is concerned with fixed expressions in the language such as “ I’m sorry” or “ Beats me!”. According to Lewis, some principles of the lexical approach are:
“- The grammar/vocabulary dichotomy is invalid
- Collocation is used as an organising principle
- Successful language is a wider concept than accurate language
- The Observe-Hypothesise-Experiment cycle replaces the Present-Practice-produce paradigm
- Most importantly, language consists of grammaticalised lexis - not lexicalised grammar “
Lexis is considered different from vocabulary as it includes not only separate words but their usual combination in original sentences. Language is, then, meaningful pieces that combined form a coherent text. Having this in mind, teaching is centred in activities that focus the acquisition of this patterns, such as working with dictionaries, original corpus, translations and intensive listening and reading of authentic materials.
