Task 10

Explain what a lexical approach is. Describe its main characteristics.

The Lexical Approach was developed by Michael Lewis, and it has the main focus on the Lexis rather than on grammar. In this approach the learning is concentrated in the words and word combinations and in the units known as chunks. Students are trained to comprehend and produce lexical phrases and fixed expressions that occur frequently in spoken language. According to the Lexical approach language consists not of traditional grammar and vocabulary but of multi-word prefabricated chunks that when it is combined produce coherent texts.
In the Lexical Approach lexis play an important role, therefore teaching should be based on the idea that language is formed by ready-made units that are appropriate for a particular situation, so teaching should center in the ways these pieces may be put together and the situations they may occur.
