Explain what a lexical approach is. Describe its main characteristics.
The lexical approach focuses on the development of learners' proficiency through words and word combinations. This way, the learner can internalize ¡¥chunks¡¦ of the speech which unconsciously become grammar patterns. When combined, these chunks produce a meaningful and coherent text.
The main characteristics of the lexical approach are:
„X Grammar should suit the lexis and not the other way round;
„X Students become more aware of their learning process by being able to recognize word chunks;
„X Special attention is paid to collocation and language patterns within a context;
„X The abilities of listening and reading receive a great value;
„X The paradigm ¡§observe-hypothesize-experiment¡¨ is enhanced.
