The Lexical Approach to SLT/FLT

Instead of focusing on grammar teaching as grammar-based approaches do, the Lexical Approach centers on the acquisition of words and words combinations (Moudraia, 2001). This approach takes into consideration the “ability to comprehend and produce lexical phrases as unanalyzed wholes, or ‘chunks’” (Lewis, 1993, p. 95, apud Moudraia, 2001) as an important part of language learning. As I understood, “chunks” are grouping words into a meaningful sentence, for instance, instead of learning the word “name”, students would learn “my name’s Paul” and so on. Lewis (1993, p. 95, apud Moudraia, 2001) states that, “these chunks become the raw data by which learners perceive patterns of language traditionally thought of as grammar”. Therefore, language can be considered as “grammaticalized lexis”, therefore students learn grammar rules based on “chunks” acquisition.

According to Lewis (1993), these are the basis principles of the Lexical Approach:

 Lexis is the basis of language.
 Lexis is misunderstood in language teaching because of the assumption that grammar is the basis of language and that mastery of the grammatical system is a prerequisite for effective communication.
 The key principle of a lexical approach is that "language consists of grammaticalized lexis, not lexicalized grammar."
 One of the central organizing principles of any meaning-centered syllabus should be lexis.

As Lewis (1993) argues, the Lexical Approach is very similar to the Communicative Approach’s principles, expect from the role of lexis in it.
