the lexical approach syntesizes some of the main points of some of the most modern theories currently in use, such as corpus linguistics, discourse analysis and moder approaches to grammar.

one of the key theories of the lexical approach is that 'language is made of chunks'; notion that is reinforced by the study of collocations made by corpus linguistics (analyzing corpora it is easy to see that there are words that often collocate with some and rarely collocate with others).

some of the most important principles of the lexical approach are:
· Collocation is a concept that is extremely important
· It is better to learn how to produce successful language than accurate language
· it is more empirical (Observe-Hypothesise-Experiment cycle replaces the Present-Practice-produce paradigm)
· language consists of grammaticalised lexis - not lexicalised grammar
