“A genre is a particular class of speech events (in discourse analysis) which are considered as being of the same type, having particular and distinctive characteristics”.

The idea of genre is one where there are specific social and linguistic rules being applied to that particular mode of communication. Obviously, it is essential for the parties involved in communication to be aware of the rules that apply to that genre.

We can cite here many examples of genre. The way people talk on the phone, academic papers, a radio program or even the way a police officer talks. There are no limits to the number of genres and they may, or may not, cross cultural barriers.

Genre-based approach is the way to have genres to help language students to learn more effectively.

It has been tried and tested in Australia where it has been used for many years now.
The main goal when studying through the genre-based approach is that it tends to focus on the structure of the text in that particular genre.

So, activities may well be any text (such as a news report). This text will be analysed from a cultural and language perspective.

For ESL students it is essential to keep students interest an to observe all the skills in the students. It is equally important to bear in mind cultural differences to avoid any surprises within the classroom environment.

In conclusion, genre-based approach may come as a contribution to language learning. However, it is vital that texts chosen for the course are identifiable with all present
