Explain what a genre-based approach is.

Genre is usually used to classify specific types of texts, both spoken and written. Texts within the same genre have in common some features that enable us to categorize them as being from the genre in question. As a matter of fact social and linguistic rules delineate the definition of the genres. Recipes, and commercial letters are two examples of different genres. They both follow rules such as social purpose and linguistic features within their structural organization.
A genre-based approach uses the concept of genre in order to teach students how to identify and write texts that follow specific structures and rules. The genre-based approach have been applied in Australia, to native speaker elementary students. However it can be taught to ESL as well. Genre-based approach could be used in order to provide the students the ability to apply different texts according to the context. It is also useful in order to acquire vocabulary and language features. As an example of a genre-based exercise, the teacher could firstly introduce the students to a text from a specific genre. Following the students would be provided with features and vocabulary applicable to that genre. And finally, the students would be asked to produce a text that fits in the genre.
