Subject: Task 11

Task 11 – Genre-based approach

Genre is something very abstract, but it was possible to notice that it’s connected with two main ideas: text production (either oral or written) and social purpose. Because of being so abstract, the concept of genre and consequently of genre-based approach was not very clear to me, although I have visited almost all the sites available. For me, it seems to be an approach which aim is to transmit the message clearly and also get it clearly depending on a certain context, something to do with the “model author” and “model reader”, concepts discussed in one of the literature disciplines I had the chance to take. The concept of genre involves specific social and linguistic “patterns” which are used in a particular circumstance of communication.
We must be aware of the different rules depending on the genre, with the objective of getting the message in a clear manner. It’s an excellent way for students to infer vocabulary from different contexts – and consequently, broaden their horizons – and also to identify some peculiar social and linguistic patterns, so that they will eventually be able to produce a text that fits a certain genre’s characteristics.
