Task 11
Explain what a genre-based approach is.

The genre-based approach is an approach in which language is taught through the different texts (oral or written) produced in the different social interactions that people might be engaged to.
Each person interacting in each social context follows different rules and make different linguistic choices, genre is exactly these “text types” that are produced in these particular situations. Therefore, in the genre-based approach grammar is taught regarding the context in which the text was produced and the purpose of producing the text, for instance, it would be analyzed in the classroom the writer/speaker choice of words, what was his purpose more than analyze the language structure. There are a great number of genres, and some of them are related to complex forms of social interaction that many times are mediated by written language.

For this approach to be applied with success the teachers should not only concentrate in the linguistic characteristics of the genres, but also be aware of what their students already know about it, and what they need to learn. Moreover, the most important thing is that the teacher should focus on the social-cultural aspects of the genre, that means the place where it was produced, the time when it was produced, why and by whom it was produced, and whom was it addressed to.
