Subject: Task # 11

Genre is defined as “a particular class of speech events which are considered as being of the same type, having particular and distinctive characteristics”. What does such a definition entail? It mainly entails that we as human beings, while we interact (in different social contexts and whit different intentions) we build up rules that help structuring the interaction. Such rules are social, psychological and, of course, linguistic ones. When one thinks of genre-based approach to language teaching, one has to think of specific rules for specific contexts being introduced in classroom. As Gazzotti has pointed out “working with genre means ‘bringing society into the classroom’”. One aspect that shows quite important in working with genre, is the fact that events such as talking on the phone, academic papers, advertisements and radio programs are considered to be specific “frames” that turn out to be specific genres. So any kind of text (the broad sense of text) can be brought into the classroom in order to provide students the contact with “real” language and specific genres. This way, cultural aspects of the foreign language being taught can be easily faced in classroom, avoiding as Cristófaro has pointed out “any surprises within the classroom environment”
