Explain what a genre-based approach is.

In order to understand well what a genre-based approach is, one has to know the definition of genre. Genre is a group of conventions which is associated with different social contexts; that is, human beings interact in different contexts and they create rules to be followed within these contexts, producing language in specific contexts for specific purposes (Bakhtin 1979 apud Gazzotti 1999).
To apply the concept of genre to language teaching is not so easy. Many teachers are so concerned with the structure of language that they do not regard the context in which a text was produced and the purpose of producing a text. Gazzotti (1999) suggests that before working with the genres, a pedagogical analysis to determine what the students already know about the genre is required. The students also have to be aware of the socio-cultural aspects that define the genre. The author also mentions that, since there are innumerable genres, a separation of the genres into groups, which would include texts that have similar characteristics, is an option to structure a course based on genres.
Thus we can realise that a genre-based approach can be brought into classroom by considering the nature of both the learning environment (the context) and the texts.
