Subject: Task 12

According to Littlewood (1981:39), functional communication activities place learners in a situation where they need to use language for a well-defined communicative purpose. Examine one textbook and choose a good communicative activity. Describe it and then classify that activity according to the types presented by Littlewood.

Activity: “Talking on the phone” (English File 2, pages 122, 124)
Worksheet Student A:
1
: You’re on holiday in Turkey. Phone Turkish Airlines to confirm your flight home. Check what time you have to be at the airport.

Flight no: TA019
Departure: 06.15
To: (Your Capital City)

2: You’re Maria’s friend. She isn’t there now. Ask if B would like to leave her a message.
3: You’re in Britain. Phone the international Operator to make a reverse charge call to your family at home.

Worksheet Student B:
1: You’re the Reservation clerk at Turkish Airlines. Confirm A’s flight. A has to be at the airport two hours before the flight leaves.
2: Phone your friend Maria. She’s out. Leave a message.
3: You’re the International Operator. A wants to make a reverse charge call. Ask what number A wants. Ask for A’s name and how to spell it. Then phone the number and put A through.

As described in section 4.4 “Sharing and processing information”, the task above can be classified as “Pooling information to solve a problem”. It demands that students get involved in the situation, going beyond the superficial given information. They are told what to do but they are supposed to interact with one another; the situation may get unpredictable once the teacher cannot control such interaction.
Students are allowed to bring this context into their realities (by being able to choose the destination of the flight, for instance); by doing so they are bound to use a more natural language as well as a more familiar lexis.
