Hello people,

My first experience with English was when I was 11 years old. I liked the language very much. However, we followed a book where the structures were very unnatural. When I went to the second stage, I felt very frustated. It seemed that we were repeating the first stage. I studied in a public school. So, every year the subject and structures that were teaching was very similar. We did not seemed to develop. So, I decided to study in a private course English. While in the public school classes were in Portuguese, in the private course the classes were in English. When I started my first undergraduate course, I stopped with the English classes. In that course there was a subject named “Inglęs Instrumental”. The classes were in Portuguese and the main goal in these classes were reading. I returned to study English in UFMG. I studied at CENEX and the subjects of the course.

There are three moments in which I think that my learning was based in some communicative approach. The first one was in the private course that I attended. There, they were very worried about our fluency. The second one is in CENEX. I think that the classes in CENEX are very based in the communicative approach. We have classes in English and the teacher require us very much to talk in English and get the meaning of words and structures in English. The last one is the classes of the course of “Letras”. The classes are all in English and we have to communicate in English in all class. I consider the course that I did “Inglęs instrumental” very similar to communicative approach instead of it is not for communication but only for reading but It helps the student to get meanings from the context.

Have a nice week,
Dayse.
