Subject: TASK 9

Explain what a task-based approach is. Describe its main characteristics.

The task-based language learning approach concerns the use of activities that enable the learner to achieve their goals in the target language. Its emphasis is on the communicative competence. During the activities, learners are encouraged to use the target language in order to solve problems. The focus of the activities are on the task itself rather than on the language. Students interact with one another and the teacher, creating and environment that resembles a real one in which they would use the language. Another characteristic of task-based activities is the possibility that they create to motivate students in the use of the language according to their own needs. The difficulty of the activities increases gradually, giving to the learners the opportunity to know new aspects of the language in a logical order. The activities reflect real life situations in which the students would use the target language. The contextualized and meaningful use of the language is a very important aspect of task-based activities. The activities in a task-based model should be organized in three different stages. In a first moment, the teacher introduces the vocabulary and all the information necessary to solve the activities. This phase is usually called pre-task stage. In a second moment, learners are basically supposed to solve the problems proposed in the activity, by interaction with each other, what is called task cycle stage. Finally, in the language focus and feedback stage, students practice the language aspects present in the task and the teacher conducts a feedback session (when necessary).
