Subject: Task 9

A task based course/lesson is an approach that develops learning through activities that give learners opportunities to use the language being learned in a authentic context. By doing so, students will be motivated and see a real purpose in the tasks because they recognize real life situations where they will need to communicate using that same language, function or structure.

The teacher should make sure that the task calls for natural interaction, so students have to communicate with other students. The teacher should also mix tasks to vary the learning of the 4 skills, with special attention to fluency. The tasks can be experience sharing, solving problems, games, presentations...

According to Skehan (1994) those activities must carry a challenge – they cannot be too difficult but they must have that Krashen theory of n+1, because they must look for new information/vocabulary/structures to fill in the gaps left by the task.

Skehan’s system uses 3 stages in a task planning. A pre task to make sure that new goals are involved, that the students understand the requirements of the task and give opportunities to the learner focus on the functions or language they will need to complete the task. A second stage – during the task – how the task is actually done, set times, groups... And a post task to promote pedagogic goals, attention to the language, mistakes, a balance of the achievements, etc.

The teacher will have to adapt materials available to them in order to conduct TBL lessons and study a best way to evaluate the students performances.
