Hi people,

Linguists’ definition of task is very important in the definition of task-based learning. I took the definition used in a paper which was written by a Japanese teacher. Task and task-based learning is “a series of graded activities that require learners to work with the target language, with the purpose of preparing learners to meet the challenges of real-word functions.” In the paper real word functions means that learners must be improved to enter in a four-year university upon graduate.
The purpose of using task-based learning is to make students to communicate orally and in public. The cycle of task based learning is the follow one: a pre-task phase, task cycle phase and pos-task phase. In the first one, students will observe, discover the topic and use brainstorm. In the cycle activity cycle phase, the student will use the target language in pair work activities, group activities and information gap activities. In the pos-task phase is the real life application. In this phase the student will participate in reading activities and listening to lectures. The four skills: speaking, listening, reading and writing are emphasized in the task-based learning. However, the main focus, in this Japanese model, is on reading with vocabulary building. They focus their attention on reading with vocabulary building, because they tested students in a college of technology and they discovered that students had only a rudimentary knowledge of the Lexis needed to comprehend even the most basic reading materials.
